Porto, or Oporto in English, is located along the Douro river estuary in NW Portugal.
The Douro River, in the City of Bridges, is crossed by six bridges, built between 1806 and 2002. The last one includes the longest concrete arch in the world.
The town includes metro, cable-car and funicular (2004), making easier to visit this beautiful city.
Opposite Oporto, in the city of Vila Nova de Gaia, there are port-wine company premises, mainly on the waterfront.
It is possible to make short cruises along the Douro River. The traditional "barco rabelo" are moored off the wine lodges.
Formerly, these vessels were used to bring the wine barrels down from the upper Douro.
