It's not only the darkness of the plant and its shadow, but what appear to be the encroaching shadows around this, which give it an "end of life" / setting sun feel. (Though noting the timestamp in reality this was probably the other way around, shot around dawn when the sun was rising rather than setting. Not that the casual viewer would know that and the light works either way.)
