Diamondback Terrapin (female)

Today my girlfriend and I volunteered for the Terrapin Project, which essentially educates others about Terrapins as well as gets us out there to help them cross a road that goes through a beautiful salt marsh. The female Terrapins come up to the road shoulders to lay their eggs in the soft gravel and sand and in crossing the road, they are often killed by people who either didn't see them, or aim for them. The largest volumes of Terrapins come up on the road during the periods of the new and full Moon. Terrapins are a Species of Special Concern in NJ though there is still a trapping season for them:( Conserve Wildlife has spearheaded a great program of education and conservation of these beautiful animals. Through erection of fences in the areas with the largest concentrations of terrapins to lobbying to have the speed limit lowered, to signs to raise awareness and volunteers to help cross the turtles, the amount of road-killed terrapins is decreasing. To read more about the project and these beautiful turtles, please visit: http://www.conservewildlifenj.org/protecting/projects/terrapin/ And remember, wishing something would happen doesn't change things. Changing things does. We can all do our part!
