I've heard them before, they make a distinctive QUONK QUONK call (kinda like an old car horn). But this is the first time seeing them. We observed 3-4 individuals calling actively. Very exciting. They are about 1- 1 1/2" long, beautifully colored like a jewel. An icon of the Pine Barrens, they are found near Atlantic White Cedar bogs, Pitch Pine lowlands and other wet areas in the Pines. State endangered species sadly, mostly due to habitat destruction and pollution. They prefer strongly acidic waters which most other frogs cannot breed in. One of the last strongholds for this species is in the Pines of southern New Jersey. It also occurs in North Carolina, South Carolina, south-central Alabama, and along the Florida panhandle.
