Vancouver June 2011

What a lovely weekend we had in Vancouver when Margaret went to visit Pete for the weekend instead of him flying home to Toronto.

We had a packed weekend playing tourists.

The Capilano Suspension bridge is Vancouver's oldest tourist attraction, originally built of hemp rope in 1889, it stretches 450 feet across and 230 feet above Capilano River. Fortunately it was rebuilt in 1955 using steel cables.

On the Treetops Adventure we walked from one magnificent Douglas fir tree to another on a series of elevated suspension bridges, some reaching as high as 100 feet above the forest floor.

Only opened June 3, 2011, this heart-stopping cliffside journey took us through rainforest vegetation on a series of cantilevered and suspended walkways jutting out from the granite cliff face above Capilano River to previously unexplored areas of the park. Not for the faint of heart, it was high and narrow and, in some sections only sheets of glass (very strong glass I'm pleased to say) separated us from the canyon floor hundreds of feet below.

After a busy Saturday morning in the afternoon we went up to visit Cyprus Mountain Olympic Skiing village where we got amazing views of Vancouver. We were quite surprised to see that there was still a load of snow up there!

Sunday was a relaxing day at Spanish Bank Beach. Although again, we walked for miles and miles and miles!

Then Monday it was back to reality, Margaret off to the airport and Pete back to work at University of BC.
