Ice Storm 22 December 2013

Well to say that it was the shortest day of the year, it certainly felt like the longest.

On Friday the freezing rain began at just after lunchtime and it continued right through to Saturday night.

On Sunday we woke up to flashing alarm clocks so knew that we had lost power at some point during the night. Then just as we were breathing a sigh of relief off it went again.

There was so much ice on everything that it brought down many power lines with the weight, and if the ice alone didn't bring them down the broken trees did.

Luckily for us we were only out for a total of 13 hours and 15 minutes. There are still about 250,000 people still without power and it is not expected to be back until Wednesday - Christmas Day!

Here are a few photos of the mayhem that an ice storm causes.

The following day was bright and sunny and quite breathtakingly beautiful. Every tree looked like it was covered in diamonds twinkling in the sunshine.
