Thiruvakkarai Vakkrakali Amman Temple in Tamil Nadu, India
At Thiruvakkarai, about 30 km from Pondicherry, there is the Vakkrakali Amman Temple. The temple was built in the 12th century and is dedicated to the Goddess Kali, who is called Vakkra Kali here, the slayer of evil. According to the legend, the Goddess vanquished the demon Vakkrasura, and so she was named Vakkrakali. But not only the Goddess Kali, also Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are venerated here.
Apart from famous Hindu temples there is also a rich variety of temples and shrines for Dravidian Gods in South India, esp. in Tamil Nadu. When visiting that Indian state one should not miss to learn more about those folk deities. I made a book (and ebook) with lots of photos about this traditional religion.
Have a full preview of my book about Dravidian deities (120 pages with lots of photos) in German: AYYANAR UND MARIAMMAN, DRAVIDISCHE SCHUTZGÖTTER IN SÜDINDIEN
