In Chengzi Village, the 1000+ houses were all built by the hillside and look like a giant honeycomb from far. The key characteristic of its architecture is that all houses (made of clay) are not only built side by side, they are stacking on one another. As such, the rooftop of one family becomes the courtyard of another family on the upper level to dry their hay or corns. All families of the same level share the same stretch of courtyard in front of their houses. To go from one level to another, one just needs to find the big hole in one part of the courtyard and ascend/descend using the wooden ladder. Due to this unique architectural design, once you manage to get into one house, you can literally gain access to all the houses in the whole village. Despite being one of the famous historical sites that attract tourists, the villagers still lead a simple life and are very hospitable to visitors. Some even invited us for lunch with their family!
