If you venture into that corner of southern California known as the Colorado Desert, you will find some very strange things -- a large salt lake known as the Salton Sea,ruins of abandoned seashore resorts, rusting hulks of old cars and trucks, dying fish and birds, and everywhere the salt and the sand.
And if you happen by this neglected corner of the world and find yourself in the little desert town of Nyland, be sure to ask anyone how to find Leonard Knight and his Salvation Mountain. Once there the gentle soft-spoken Leonard will relish the opportunity to give you a tour of his mountain built of bales of straw and adobe, whatever he can salvage from the desert, and lots and lots and lots of paint. If you can't get out to see Leonard, you can catch him in the Sean Penn production 'Into the Wild'.
