A "large" number of black soldiers did not fight for the Confederacy - no where near the over 209,000 men of color soldiers and sailors fighting in the United Sates Colored Troops. The Louisiana Native Guard volunteered their services, but changed sides when they were abandoned by the Confederates, and fought for the Union as the Corps d'Afrique. So afraid that arming blacks would undermine the South's justification of slavery, and that blacks would turn on them, there was no real attempt by the South to form black fighting units until near the end of the war.
