HAND-PAINTED tiles, or azulejos as they are called in Portuguese, have been one of Portugal's truly national art forms for centuries.
Large panels depicting biblical events, hunting scenes, or floral abstract patterns frequently cover the interior walls of churches and monasteries and the exterior walls of the country’s grandest houses, while more prosaic scenes of labouring in the fields adorn the exteriors of country cottages.
