Building began in the 3rd century BC and the pyramid is dedicated to the deity Quetzalcoatl.
The pyramid is also known as tlachihualtepetl (nahuatl for 'artificial mountain').
According to the Guinness Book of Records it is the largest pyramid as well as the largest monument
ever constructed anywhere in the world. Total volume of over 4.45 million cubic metres make it even
larger than that of the Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt.
The Catholic Church of Our Lady of Remedies (Iglesia de Nuesra Senora de los Remedios)
was built in the 16th century on top of the Pyramid.
