Panther Chameleon DSC4787

Fort Myers, Florida

Personally, I think this is a gaudy chameleon, but I love that coiled tail. It is native to Madagascar and lives in tropical forests.

Their strange looking eyes can rotate and focus separately, so they can look at two different objects at the same time. In fact, they can see 360 degrees around their bodies at one time. Their upper and lower eyelids are joined and there is only a pinhole large enough for the pupil to see through. They have keen eyesight which allows them to see small insects from a long distance.

The panther chameleon has a very long tongue which is often longer than its body.
