This area is right above the basement stairs. This spot was once inside a closet because the basement stair ceiling creates a slanting protrusion above the kitchen floor. When we remodeled, we needed more floor-to ceiling space because the kitchen we bought had so many floor-to-ceiling cabinets. In order to take back the space from this closet, we had to come up with a way to hide the slant. I decided on a bookcase for my husband's cookbooks. I wanted to have this cabinet flush with the one next to it, so had our carpenter make a stool/low counter in front of the bookcase to hide the front part of the slant. Our carpenter came up with the idea of putting a drawer under the bookcase so that if someone sat on this spot, they would not be sitting up against the glass. We use the low counter to hold things that get everyday use - a scale for husband's measured portions and his knife block.
