Mayesville is a small town in eastern Sumter County. The birthplace of famed educator Mary McLeod Bethune. Received some significant damage during the Civil War. Things went well up until the early 20th century. Then a combination of better roads, better automobiles and trucks, the nearness of the City of Sumter and the Great Depression more or less combined to put paid to the business district. The revival mentioned in the on the sign is progressing rather slowly.
