Close up and crabby

Fernandina Island, Galapagos Group

I imagine a pot full of crabs of this size, back in pirate days, must have been quite enticing. Since the Islands are about 800 kms from the coast, they must have been very welcome (the tortoises, also). It's easy to see the allure of this place on a purely practical level. Nwadays the practical has turned to tourism and so the old uses have reversed. Now it's the photo which is the prize rather than the animal in the pot.

What a fascinating crab! I thought at first it must have been painted ;-). Excellent and very colorful capture, Alwyne. V.
