Most lanterns were simply that, but a significant number, as well as the fire-lighter which gave their heat, were equipped with a firecracker tail, so a stream of sparks flew out behind. i presume there was some mechanism to delay the ignition of the gunpowder in these, since they didn't start sparking until they were in the air.
