Wat Rong Khun, about 10 kms out of Chiang Rai, is the 'White Temple'. It is a complex still under construction - and will continue to be so for decades to come, according to the plans of the artist as stated on publicity at the site. His inspiration is varied, Buddhist, Hindi and Thai, hearkening back in style to old traditional art. It a blend and I suspect will probably change, since George Bush and Osama bin Laden both have a visual representation on the mural in the one main temple currently visited. This interior was not allowed to be photographed, so I couldn't show you. I presume in a a few decades, people will ask "George Who?" and "Osama What?" so some things will have to change. The construction uses concrete (and constant updating with white paint). Pieces of glass embedded in the surface give it a shimmer and sparkle which is overwhelming. Some of the glass was, in places, painted over, so I imagine it was even more brilliant previously, perhaps too much so, on a clear day. There are monster figures and angel wings , there are ogre faces leering from columns and protective warriors on stairs, and carp, white carp in the entrance pond.
