The sensible part of the wild horse herd. The mare. She is the true leader in the wild horse herd. She finds the water in the hot dry summer, the forage on top of the mountains where the wind blows away the deep snow. The stallions do the fighting, the mare leads the herd to survive.

This female is just forty feet above me, keeping watch as the others doze in the afternoon sun.
