Weird title. Yes. But this beautiful golden palomino stallion, being one of my favorite and most photogenic stallions in the desert, has been re-named.
We we first found him, we called him 'Romeo' because he was beautiful and quickly gathered a small harem of mares from the other older stallions. And although he initially showed the necessary aggressive nature to win and defend his small harem of mares, the chore eventually was too much for the golden stallion. Within a few months, the mares he had won were all lost to other males.
He also lost something else.....We now call him 'One eared Charlie'. A big male quite literally bit off his entire left ear, right down to the nub. You can find some of the images of One eared Charlie (before and after) here in the gallery.
He is still one of my favorites, but considerable more careful now around the other herd stallions, and always now when close to herd stallion he is very careful to place another single bachelor male between him and the attack that will come his way. The dominate stallions seem to sense that he at one time was a formidable opponent and keep a sharp eye on him.
