I have watched and photographed many fights among the stallions, ranging from playful young colts to jousting practice between bachelor males, then the totally brutal, all-out fighting-with-the-intent-to-kill screaming mayhem struggle of a dominant stallion against a serious challenger.
This photo is one of a series of about a hundred images taken as I witnessed a fight that was amazing. The younger challenger would not give up, the older horse countering with all he could muster. The two were holding nothing back; biting for the throat, striking out with front hooves, dodging, kicking, and screaming as they fought.
It was amazing.
In the end, the young stallion managed to win just one mare. But on my last trip to the desert, he was still engaged in fighting with the same herd stallion, who had three more mares.
