When a challenger gets serious about winning a female, he will risk it all in the fight. Teeth are the factor that I use to judge the severity of the battle. If both of the stallions battling high in the air are striking with their teeth, I know it is very serious. The jaws of a mature fighting stallion can tear through and rip flesh. Male horses have four canine teeth just behind the front cuspids. These are very sharp and an effective tool against another male.
I have a series of images showing the red stallion clamping down on the young challenger's front leg so hard that when the bitten stallion managed to rip himself loose, it showed a slash wound open to the bone.
