The afternoon in the desert yesterday with the mustangs was eventful. There were fights going on most of the day. One of the conflicts was very serious with the combatants being very well matched and confident in their abilities. In this image, a young challenger sensed that he could contend with an older stallion and win one of his four mares. They were very focussed on the fight at hand, which allowed me to get fairly close and catch them in the action. There are days spent among the horses when I don't even see two stallion rear up and fight like in this photo, but yesterday, I was witness to two very brutal stand-up-and-fight skirmishes. One was so close to me that my 170-500mm lens was too close, even backed off to 170mm, all I could get was their heads flying above. Needless to say, the close-up images are very graphic and amazing. I will post those later, probably in a series taken at 6-frames a second to display the action.
