The single stallions learn to perfect their own fighting methods; Mooch, the larger male will rear up and strike with his front hooves. His bigger size is accentuated more dramatically when he rises up. Little red, on the other hand, is quick and agile. He moves deftly around and away from the flying hooves and teeth of the rearing Mooch and watches for an opening to strike.
In this exchange, Mooch rose up three times as the smaller red horse moved in and out. Just before Mooch touched down on the third time, Little Red lunged forward and clamped his teeth on Mooch's cheek. Mooch squealed in pain and ripping away from the bite, turned and sprinted away, with Little Red in hot pursuit.
Score one for Little Red.
