That first day a year ago when my 11-year old son and I drove out into the desolate West Desert of Utah to see the wild horses, it had just snowed about 4 inches the night before. One of our first images was this frame. The mustangs were very wary and we could not get any closer than 300 yards.
Being concerned that we might stress the horses, we bought better (long) lenses for our cameras and on later trips learned how to quietly approach the herds in a way that did not disrupt what they were doing. Our photos since that day were of the herds behaving in a natural state and not running away from us.
This image was originally shot in color, but we liked the black and white version.
