I know americans are strangely obsessed with their flag so I'll avoid commenting on the subject matter but it seems to me that where this picture fails is the sun falling on the guy's face leaving parts of it over exposed. I wonder if fill in flash would have helped (although perhaps with those glasses it would have been tricky).
There's also what looks like some weird JPEG artifacts on his lower face and sweater. Were they deliberately introduced?
