I completely agree with your comments, and I have actually tried to accomplish what you ask for without sacrificing too much image quality. The light conditions was really bad when I took the picture, as it was almost dark and the bird was in a shaded place on top of that. So I had to use the flash, but the reach of the 3600 wasn't really sufficient to illuminate the bird enough from the distance I shot. Therefore, the image came out pretty dark and dull, and I had to work quite a bit in Photoshop to get the image to look at least decent.
Cheers!

Fred,
I've visited this shot several times trying to decide whether or not I'd prefer it lighter and with more contrast - and I'm still not sure. As Bruce points out, the bird and stone are very similar in tone - and, it's such a splendid shot of the bird beginning to take flight, I wish it were more distinct. But, that said, I also kind of enjoy the muted earthy tones that could be easily spoiled by too high a curves boost.
Composition is great with just enough elements to keep it interesting without getting "busy".

This is exquisite Fred. Nice work. My only nitpick is that the bird kinda blends in with the stones colorwise. But hey, whadya going do? Nice work! -- Bruce
