Currious, did the flash excite them? Of all of God's creatures snakes and yellow jackets are my least favorite. Been bitten all too often cutting grass by those darn things.

Yellow jackets (wasps) pack a nice wallop in their sting.
I wouldn't be so close or at least walking on eggshells.

I'm sure there's more interesting "stuff" down in the hole, but it was too scary to get an "overhead" shot, those Yellow Jackets were going in and out in a "line" straight above the hole. I was off to the side, but now that I've done a little research, I was crazy for not being 10X away!

Nice shot... lovely colours, and quite brave :) I think I'd have wanted to try that at 420mm :)
I wonder if it would have been possible to capture it with a larger DoF - it feels like the interesting detail continues...

I like the vibrant yellows in this - can almost hear the buzzing of the bees.
