Fantastic, Claudio! I've never seen anything like this before....very cool :)

Yes, colors have a role in my experience, mostly as "intensifiers". You can still see the effect in BW but if you make the background blue , for example, the "wave" pretty much stops.

This was truly a moving experience. Are the colors important to the effect? Looking forward to the voting..
x points to Claudio - his shot really made me sick :)

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the comments... and apologies for all the motion sickness!

I've alwasy been fascinated by this type of perception illusions. My interest started when I studied many years ago perception and colors. I was fascinated by Johannes Itten, The Art of Color , and all his work on subjective color perception. I still have an little booklet in Italian published by Kodak ( which I included in a shot for A touch of Color .
) which collects several papers on this subject, with many examples of these type of effects. For the same reasons I always loved Victor Vasarely's work .

When I saw this challenege this type of effect was the first association I made.

This one in particular was inspired by the work of Akiyoshi Kitaoka at the Ritsumeikan University. I recreated a pattern similar to one of his and then did several experiments before finding a position and context that worked the best.

Hi Claudio,

It's a really striking effect you have accomplished in this picture. Fascinating indeed. I wonder how you figured out this effect.

Nice one Claudio. Now if only I could get my monitor to stop 'swimming' I can get back to some serious stuff! Cheers, John
