Thanks for your comments guys. Paul, to answer your question, yes I did a little shadow/highlight work here, but not too much. As luck would have it, the sun is just high enough in the sky to bounce off the white surf and illuminate the bird from below.
Bruce, Just for my education. I see the metering mode is matrix, still the heron and the surf are well exposed (no black Heron against white surf). Did you do some blending here ?

What a moment you captured - a very cliff hanging one. It makes me want to see what happen the next moment. Did the bird fly away or was he swallow by the wave (not likely), or... I also like the color tone of the picture. Very nice.
