Not too happy perched here by Rene Little

Mt. Hagen, Papua New Guinea

This is a painting of New Guinea's national bird "Bird of Paradise" truly beautiful to behold in the wild.

Hi Rene,
I love both your colourful photos, but I prefer this one despite having less detail to take in becuase it is so vibrant and satisfies the theme so well, even if the birds are not so happy.
Cheers, John

Hi Claudio and thank you.
They truly are the most beautiful bird imaginable, but unfortunately they kill them and sell them. The beak serves as the piece of equipment by which they can be mounted, their feathers are glorious and that is why they are so popular as souvenirs. Every time I see a dead one I try to encourage the locals to keep them alive, but unfortunately without any success, people and I mean "ex-pats" keep buying them. I have tried to explain that at the rate they are killing them there will be none left, as is with so many other animals. I guess when people are just so poor they will do anything to feed themselves and their families, it is so hard to change the culture.
Regards
Rene

LOL They do look a bit upset! I've seen your other capture of this bird and it is amazing.
