Early in the morning on April 19, 2007 staff from both Toronto General & Western Hospital Foundation and Trillium Gift of Life Network honored me with a surprise breakfast party to celebrate the 5th anniversary of my lung transplant.

And it was a complete surprise, because I thought I was going to a breakfast meeting with potential major financial donors to the Foundation for lung transplant research. I was flabbergasted when I walked in the room to be greeted by Dr. Shaf Keshavjee, Director of the Lung Transplant Program at Toronto General Hospital and my transplant surgeon, who was standing beside a cake inscribed "Happy 5th Anniversary Merv".

Then the events unfolded and these pictures tell the whole story. Needless to say I was deeply honored and moved by this wonderful acknowledgement of my efforts to promote organ donation awareness and fundraising for transplant research during the past few years of my new life. Special thanks go to Rebecca Davies and Grant Hagerty for their roles in making this event happen and their efforts to make it such a surprise.
