I had originally thought this was a Dusky Grouse but was corrected by Garrett MacDonald. I've used some of his description below.
While they can look similar to "Blue" Grouse, things to look for in Ruffed include overall smaller size (which can be hard to judge without another bird for comparison), slimmer less chunky build, shorter neck and tail, and the obvious black and white barring on the flanks. "Blue" Grouse can show a crested look depending on posture, but the crested appearance in your first photo is classic Ruffed. Habitat differs, too, with Ruffed tending toward lower elevations along riparian areas and "Blues" higher in mixed-coniferous forest and meadows up and away from riparian.
