Matthew, such beautiful pictures. I found your gallery from the Celery Farm in trying to look up some info for that location. Really nice! Thanks. Angela

Hey Matthew - It's so funny I was speaking to my sister in New Mexico tonight and she was telling me how she used to camp out in the Celery Fields many years ago. She asked me if I knew of them and mentioned that they were probaly gone due to development since it's been so many years now.I'm her little siter so of course I never got to see them since I was in a neighboring town. I happened to googled the word Celery farm and much to our surprise the links to Fyke Nature Preserve - Celery Farm, came up and the link to your site appeared.
Now, thanks to your awesome photos, I can see the beauty of the place she so fondly remembers. Thank you so much for your time in taking these breath taking shots.

St John is my favorite place on earth & your website has allowed me to bring a sweet memory of paradise into my droll, everyday work life. Now when I log on, the image that greets me is of the soft palm shadows played against the blue green sea. Thank you.
Connie 23-Mar-2006 01:42
Matthew, how do we buy some of your work???

You are a wonderful photographer! My husband and I were married in 2003 on St. Thomas, but we have a special love for St. John. We've been there twice and are looking forward to going back in the future. You have captured so many beautiful scenes in your pictures. How could I get a large print, and how much do you charge?
Thanks,
Emily

I want to thank you for the link over to your galleries here at Pbase, Matt. I just picked up the 17-40 and am extremely pleased with it. I've been looking through your St. John's portfolio to get some shooting technicals as I don't want to waste but few shots in Hawaii this August. Great shots there by the way! Good luck in your quest for something even wider. Yes....renting is a definite option!

Very nice work. Where on St John were the pictures with the giant boulders taken (image 26496851 SJ40 from the Feb 04 gallery)? I'm planning a trip to St John next year and found those images very interesting
Guest 03-Mar-2005 01:18
Matthew,
Thank you for visiting my site and for the comment. I have been admiring your photos from St. John for quite a few monthes now. I have to tell you that they are the most beautiful of the island I have seen. I went last August for a week and will be going back for more the end of May. It is hard to describe to someone how beautiful the island is and you have really done it justice. I hope to take some better pictures when I am there this time. Thank you for sharing!

Hey Matthew! Your awesome shots were our deciding factor as to where we should go for our anniversary. Did you all rent a jeep? Is that the way to go? How much are they per day? Is it pretty affordable to island hop from St. John? Sorry for all the questions, but we are getting very excited for our trip! We will be there the first week in June. Any helpful hints would be much appreciated! Thanks again for making our decision for us!!! Please e-mail us at ericksonutes@yahoo.com

Have a great day!!1

Matthew,
Did you stay at those villas on your last trip to St John? We stayed at the Westin last Oct. Is the Villas a different experience than the resort?
Thanks, were thinking of going back!

Matthew,

I wonder if you would email me about getting 2 or 3 of the St. John's images? Will be on St. John 26-31 DEC, but back after that. Thank you, Louise

Hi Matthew,

First off I want to tell you I love your shots of St. John. My wife and I have been to most of the sites you worked at a few times and they brought back great memories. I love the Gibney shots best, great beach and water. If I can ask, Did you do photoshop any of your pictures or are they raw? also I own pretty much the same equipment you have and now looking for a good filter set. Any advice for polerizing and uv filters? If you would like I have a few Pictures of Drunken bay I could send you, (nice for a beginner)

Let me know.

Hi Matthew, I've seen you have owned both Canon D10 and D20.
I own D10 and would like to upgrade to D20. Is it worth in your experience
in terms of resolution and print size increase? I like Landscape and wildlife
photography..
Many thanks in advance for your kind reply.

Matthew, my god I had no idea that was you the other day. I am just in awe of your web site. I do not know which gallery I like the best. I guess its the gorilla's as I have had a facination and a desire to go to the domain and photograph them.

That was only the second time trying my hand at this type of photography. I don't know why you change from the 50 to 500 because your pictures can't get any better. What amazes me is the detail you get. I hope I can get pictures that slightly compare to your in flight Herons, Wow. You have a fan. Hope to see you there again.

I haven't left a comment before now because I can't make up my mind of what I like the best, there isn't a bad one in the batch.

Excellent shots of Salt Lake - the most convincing argument yet for buying a 17-40L.

Hi Chuck... right there in Cruz bay theres maybe 3-4 bars. One of which is called the Beach Bar and it almost right on the water on the harbor. There's another funky bar on the other side of the island in Coral Bay -- I forget the name.

St. John doesn't have much nightlife -- but you can take a 20 min ferry to St. Thomas for that.

St. John is absolutely beautiful -- you'll never run out of photo ops or sites to explore. Best thing to do is rent a car and explore the island on your own.

Have fun!

Matt

Hi Matt,
I am heading to St Johns in about 10 days. Have any tips on some cool bars or sights to see? I am thinking about bring either one or maybe two of my cameras. I hear there is a ton of beautiful sights to take shots of. My wife and I are big Jimmy Buffett fans and hope to find some real islandy type bars and places to see in St John.
Thanks,
Chuck

Hi Chuck... thanks for the compliment. I've been at it somewhat seriously since this past Feb. when we took the trip out to St. John. That trip really sparked an interest in photography.

I actually just sold my Canon 10D Digital SLR today and will be picking up a 20D this Fri. I also use a Canon S400 for times I don't want the lug the SLR around. Theres a few pictures in these galleries from older cameras I have sold -- such as the Canon G2 and an Epson 850z.

Thanks again,
Matt

Hi Matthew,
I love your pictures. I was wondering how long you have been into photograph and how many (and what) cameras you currently own?

Thanks,
chuck

Thanks for the gallery of photos taken with the Canon 17-40L. I am going to order my copy tomorrow, so I will have it on my short trip to Arizona. I will enjoy taking more time to look at your other galleries.

Thanks. Tom

Hi Matthew, I met you at the Celery Farm this Saturday. I had lost your pbase info and you gave it to me again. As I suspected... very inspiring. Just what I needed. So far I have looked through your St John photos. Some great stuff there...not all can be attributed to the camera! I have been disabled for some years and haven't reached point that I can travel yet....but I know St John will be one place I visit when I am able. Such synchronicity...after I spoke to you I met a lady who wanted to buy a camera and I told her about Sigma lenses. My first outfit as Photography major was Sigma.

Your photos make me want to plunge headlong into photography again. I had given it up and become a designer. Used to do large scale photography on cloth in my installations. Approached photography more as fine art. Have friends now who cannot get work as a Photographer unless they want to do weddings. yeesh! ugh! So I think because no one bought my work and the lack of steady income for a living I gave it up altogether and became a designer. But now after the illness, I think about things differently. I sing and take voice lessons even though I never will sing a solo. Love life and life loves you back. Do what you can and what you love. Glad I bumped into you so I am afforded this inspiration. You are both so lucky to go to St John agin in November! Thanks much! Best regards, Elise

Matt: Great shots of the Angels. Some positions you've captured were somewhat unique to the many, many photos of the Blue Angels that I've seen. Keep up the good work! SEMPER FI !!

My husband wasn't convinced that St. John was the place to go until I came across your pictures. He spent 5 minutes looking through them and we booked our flight and started making hotel reservations. Thanks for sharing!

Hi Jack,

I'd say it's very close to the 50 1.8. In fact, I don't use the 50 1.8 that much anymore. I definitely recommend the Tamron, just make sure you can return it, as there's been some quality control issues. Good Luck.

Matt
Jack 06-Apr-2004 10:27
Hi Matthew,

i have read you are using tamron 28-75 onto your camera..
io own two primes : sigma 24mm 1,8 and canon 50 1,8
but i wish a good zoom..and leave the bag with these two lenses.
i see your photos are really good..so that i could think tamron 28-75
is as good as my 50 1,8..or not ?
what do you think about ?

bye,
Jack.
