The USS Hornet was built during World War II and was active through the Vietnam war. In 1969, the USS Hornet picked up Apollo 11 and 12 as its last high-profile missions.
She was decommissioned in 1970 heading for the scrap yard, before supporters of the air craft carrier were allowed to dock her at the Alameda Naval Air Station in 1998, across the bay from San Francisco. Today, she serves as a museum, visitors can stay overnight and experience life aboard an aircraft carrier.
