In August 2016, I visited Greenland’s remote East Coast. Traveling by plane from Reykjavik, Iceland, to Kulusuq, Greenland, then by helicopter to Tasiilaq and from there on a 5-hour boat ride to a remote Base Camp. Established by Natural Habitat, the tent camp offered an insight into the remote landscape and culture of the local Inuit population. Exploring the waters and icebergs by zodiac and by hiking, the narrow strip of barren land between the permanent ice shield and the Atlantic offered an amazing geology, sparse vegetation with mosses and colorful spring bloom. There was little wild- and birdlife which was surprising to me. Yet the short summers and long cold winters might explain the inhospitable environment. The only land mammal on the East Coast of Greenland, the arctic fox, was elusive and we never saw one. There are muskox on the Westerns shores. Meeting with native subsistence Inuits and learning about their way of life was an eye-opening experience. Using hunting techniques passed on from father to son, they predominantly hunt for sea mammals by boat and by dog sled.
