Award-Winning Portfolio

Alcatraz - Reconstructed
Abandoned and neglected for years, The Rock was left to rot and decay. Towering on an island in the entry to the San Francisco Bay with a beautiful view of the city and the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz is a monument known to many as an impenetrable prison from which escape proofed unsuccessful for the few who tried.
Menacing – yet strangely beautiful - the images show Alcatraz during a special evening tour which lead into areas seldom seen by today’s visitors who tour The Rock, now a National Park. In the glow of last light, the entry hall, rows of cell :Towering Cell Blocks” and “Trapped”, the solitary confinement – here depicted in the image “The Cathedral”, the basement with “No Exit”, the hospital wing with “Sterile Gates” all come to life in this series of images that reconstructs the strange beauty of the old prison.

This Portfolio was selected for the Mike Ivanitsky Award for Excdellence in Photography by Foothill College, Art and Photography Department, April 2007
