Appears to be a Barn Spider, araneus cavaticus, or something closely related. It's the spider of the children's book Charlotte's Web. They make big webs across open spaces outdoors in the early evening, and they catch lots of moths and flies during the night. When the web gets too damaged to patch up, the spider eats it to reclaim the silk protein and spin a new web.
