The story goes, and my father showed me this when I was a teenager:

My grandfather Sheriff Ed Jones, was standing outside the courthouse when an inebriated rogue with a bone to pick stood across the street and took a shot at him. Thankfully he missed, but the bullet scooped out some brick material on the courthouse rather than granddad's skull.

Not sure if the intent was to kill or to simply warn! The end result was Deputy Virge Kelley saw what was happening and paid the villain a quick visit across the street and took him alive. I'm sure it wasn't pretty, and the rogue villain, if capable of cerebral learning, found the err of his ways rather quickly.
