Bologna is surrounded by castles and palaces. There was no surprise, Bologna was founded in 534 BC and there were so many generations of building up defensive castles or luxurious palaces. To fully experience a city like this, one really needs to walk alone on the narrow streets, in the middle of the nights when they were devoid of all traffic, preferably with fogs and rains, to soak in the atmosphere.
