On the day of our visit, because it had rained early that morning and was fully overcast, the 275 square miles of gypsum dunes touted as 'white' were in reality a light tan color, much easier on the eyes. We and our cameras were lucky that the wind wasn't up to its usual furor as we explored zones of plant and animal life with the help of interpretive signs--some of which showed the dunes' habit of burying anything in their path.
