The web's descriptions of the road to the top of 11,921' Weston Pass mention "a few rocks," and fail entirely to include the potholes. It was a jarring ride, but the Subaru made it. I wasn't dressed for the howling, icy wind the first time I came here, so I stayed in the car and sewed while the man scampered up the flank of Weston Peak on the Park County side of the pass. My second time here, I found a mine-assay pit on the Lake County side to sit in for a while to get below a lot of the airstream. The valley below the peak used to be a mining community; pieces of several cabins sit forlornly among the rockpiles, stumps of former trees, and new trees. Beavers have been busy at times below the town area on the Lake County side, resulting in fine habitat for moose.
