St. Anthony

In eastern Idaho, "St. Anthony" means several things, one of which is a youth correctional facility on beautifully manicured, tree-shaded grounds south of town. I always enjoy a stop at the little park near the highway at the north entrance to town, where the Henry's Fork of the Snake River tumbles noisily through several dramatic cascades. Outside of town, an 11,000 acre system of sand dunes rises above the agricultural plain, creating a topographic heydey for "four-wheelers" and other small, noisy vehicles.

Incredibly, the dunes also shelter untrammeled spaces where junipers and wildflowers, bees and butterflies make their living.
