Ruby Mountains

Across half of Elko County, Nevada, running from SW to NE, a magically improbable glaciated range thrusts up out of the flat farmland,
one of the fault block uplift mountain ranges that form the "army of caterpillars" noted by Frémont in his explorations
of what later became the Western United States. This one is the beloved Ruby Mountains, so named for the garnets that sparkle from the stone substrate.
South of Elko about 20 miles, a short, gently but insistently uphill drive leads into Lamoille Canyon, WELL worth visiting even when the campgrounds are closed (October-June).

At the Rubies' east end, high above the crossroad village of Wells and nestled at the north end of the Humboldt Range,
the Angel Creek and Angel Lake campgrounds also pull visitors up the steep entry road.
