Coyote returning (up the trail!) from a morning prowl
With only the trail camera on duty through March, at least we got to show SOME action around our place.
In May, that all faded a bit, as my computer decided it couldn't read those files anymore, but thank goodness, the next time I tried, it decided they were good again.
In early April, the real photos began, with a trip to southern New Mexico to visit friends hosting at City of Rocks State Park.
Of course, we also saw places on the way there, during our time there, and on the way home.
April 13 -- In our neighborhood, we're beginning to see the greening of Potentillas and the departure of what little snow we had.
Oh, and finally, the trail camera caught a badger, a few days ago!
May 1 -- Caught some of the excitement as a herd of hair sheep were moved out of their winter paddock and into one with
slightly better provisions, at a relative's farm in NW Kansas.
May 2 -- I fell off a porch and broke my right arm,
so photography is one of the many things I won't be doing for some weeks, at least.
June 19, 20 -- Hallelujah! Lots of rain over the past couple of weeks, plus finally some 70°+ days, and today, mushrooms, AND I can lift my arm enough (barely)
to get some images! He says these mushrooms are the same as the ones under the trees by the house that the squirrels gobble up,
and I'm saying maybe not, since these are not close to trees. But, 2 days later, they were gone sans trace, so maybe he's right.
June 24 -- A visit from family members, especially one who wishes to climb rocks, is a great excuse to go play in Castle Rocks Gulch.
June 25 -- We found bison and fast, high water at Badger Basin State Wildlife Area, Park County.
June 27 -- More high water at Tomahawk State Wildlife Area, Park County.
June 28 -- And again more high water (different river), Buena Vista, Chaffee County.
June 30 -- In the time between doctor appointments, we hiked a little way up a trail we hadn't tried before--the Avalanche trail that leads to Mount Yale.
July 10-13 -- Camping with family led us to river and mountain views we hadn't seen before.
July 26, 27 -- Exploring McQuaid Trail between Salt Creek and Pony Park roads, Park County, Colorado. We walked all I could
of the Salt Creek side, getting some fuzzy photos of Mentzelia and some stumps; we walked a tiny portion of the Pony Park side
after finally FINDING it; would've done more but it was raining on us and it was lunchtime. We'll go back.
July 30 -- We tried again to explore the McQuaid Trail, and it rained again, so we went farther up into the hills instead (and cleaned some campsites).
July 31 -- While Randy and Connie hiked to the top of North Kaufman Ridge, I poked along the edge of Kaufman Pasture.
August 1 -- We returned to Avalanche Trail and with lower water at the un-bridged creek crossing, we got a little farther up than before,
and also forayed to Cottonwood Creek, down the hill and across the highway.
August 7 -- We headed up Cottonwood Canyon again and decided to turn into the side canyon leading to Cottonwood Lake,
where we drove as far up as we dared, and then turned around and stopped at the small, well-signed wildlife viewing area,
where a tiny trail enticed us a short way upward into the aspens.
August 8 -- Getting out on an afternoon without rain, we forayed onto the Pony Park side of the McQuaid Trail again.
August 14 -- We went up the hill to fetch a gazillion shell cases and shattered skeet, calling a halt when we got hailed on.
When that stopped, I took pictures there, and then we drove up another hill to clean a campsite, and I took some more from there.
August 18 -- Out in the meadows again.
August 24 -- Discovered that the canyon of Chalk Creek, which leads to the settlement of St. Elmo, has a delightful creek cascade
alongside the road past the Mt. Princeton campground, and a hike to a waterfall that comes out of a side canyon.
August 25 -- To celebrate Randy's youngest son's 40th birthday, we returned to Tomahawk State Wildlife Area; between rains,
each of us did what we enjoy most, going off in three directions.
August 26 -- Returned to Chalk Creek Canyon; got images from the part of the viewpoint I couldn't negotiate when it was dry yesterday.
Then we returned to the Cascade Creek Trail that I didn't complete yesterday, and this time I got to the (sadly unimpressive) viewpoint.
August 30 -- We went out to see the rising of the blue moon, and I actually took nearly 70 pictures of it and the clouds it was behind.
September 1 -- Picking up shards and shell cases again, I came to a fine collection of the white mushrooms that grow on cow dung.
They weren't fresh and new but were still worthy.
September 5 -- We cleaned up to our pasture after Labor Day Weekend, and leaving our last campground, I saw an image waiting for me.
September 14 -- Returning home, in first gear, along the back road from dropping a carload of bagged weeds at the trash compactor,
I took pictures here and there...or thought I did...I actually didn't have a data card in the camera, so nothing really happened.
There was a message about it in the viewfinder, but I couldn't read it.
September 15 -- Autumn's first snow is always a thrill! I stayed indoors and enjoyed the window views.
September 20 -- Our last summer backroad drive...WITH a data card installed.
September 23 - November 6 -- Our annual trek to work at family property in California and experience new national parks brought back hundreds
of images from Utah, Nevada, St. Helena, Sunset State Beach, Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, Joshua Tree National Park,
Petrified Forest National Park, Canyon de Chelly National Monument, and Aztec Ruins National Monument!
This was the debut photography trip for my IPhone 13, because I forgot that I had a 3rd Panasonic battery with me.
