The jumbled rockfall lay between us and the storied grove of ancient limber pines, an island in a sea of young spruces and bristlecone pines. Across it zigzagged a trail of carefully placed crushed rock that made our advance vastly simpler than that of the first comers to cross it; we were grateful indeed.
