Nestled in the aspen-spangled hills above Boulder, Colorado (between the Front Range and the Rocky Mountains) and actually in two counties (we visited only in Gilpin County), Golden Gate Canyon is an easy outing within an hour from metropolitan Denver, Colorado. Two campgrounds, plus a few cabins and yurts and a "horse-friendly guest house" (check that out on their website; those are THEIR words) are available for visitors staying to enjoy the twelve trails (a total of 35 miles) at leisure. Only some of the trails are for hiking or skiing; others are for horseback riders or mountain bikers.
