Accorded national status in 2005 for its outstanding scenery, this stretch of two highways between Arnold (in Calaveras County) and Markleeville (in Alpine County) is said to be among the least-traveled of all the Sierra passes. Smoke clouded the air in one direction, which added to the ambiance.
