Central High School National Historic Site

This still-operating public high school was where in 1957, the U.S. National Guard escorted nine new
African-American students into the previously white-only high school in Little Rock, Arkansas.
Even with our government shut down, we were able to tour the grounds and find some information.

From the Cultural Landscape Foundation:
"In 1957, three years after the U.S. Supreme Court determined the segregation of public schools to be unconstitutional,
nine African American students attempted to enter the high school. Their denied entry into the school drew national attention
and President Eisenhower sent federal troops to escort the students, referred to as the Little Rock Nine."
