Alfred Loeb State Park

We visited park host friends twice in early April and fought with respiratory allergies for a week after the second visit
...maples and cottonwoods (at least) were blooming. The property had been logged in earlier decades to remove the much-sought-after
Umbellularia californica, known in Oregon as "Oregon Myrtle" and in California as "California Bay Laurel." The tree's wood, fruits,
and leaves are all valuable for use by both native groups and European settlers. After old-growth harvest, the trees
put out multiple sprouts surrounding the cut trunk; these remain throughout the park and on neighboring hillsides.
